Province signs funding agreement with 21 northwest communities

A new community funding agreement was signed today (Friday) between the province and the Northwest BC Resource Benefits Alliance. (RBA)

This will help benefit 21 local governments in the region of the province with $250 million over five years.

“The funding provided through the RBA agreement will have significant impact in all of our communities and being able to count on funds year after year is a game-changer for long-term planning,” said Smithers Mayor Gladys Atrill.

These funds will be used to renew or replace capital assets like roads, water, sewer, and other amenities.

“We made a promise to the people of the northwest that we would make good on a commitment to sharing in the revenues to make our communities the strongest that they can be,” said Stikine MLA Nathan Cullen.

Representatives from most of the communities were present to sign the agreement from Vanderhoof to communities on Haida Gwaii and north.

This agreement has been in the talks for about a decade, with an MOU being signed in 2022.

“Our partnership with the province ensures that the economic benefits of industrial development are shared equitably, leading to robust infrastructure and vibrant, sustainable communities for everyone in the region,” said Atrill.
