A new BC Stats report is projecting the province’s population will continue to grow.
The report, Sustaining Growth: Population and Demography for BC and Canada, reflects trends seen in numbers released by Statistics Canada in December, and provides a high-level summary of demographic data to support program, policy, and service development across government.
The province said in a news release higher federal immigration targets and changing immigration policies are resulting in higher population growth for both BC and Canada.
According to the report, BC’s population is projected to reach 7.9 million by 2046, an increase of 44 per cent compared to 5.5 million in 2023.
It also said Vanderhoof is projected to grow 30.1 per cent to 1,421.
Fraser Lake is projected to grow to 1,163.
Fort St. James is projected to grow to 1,930.
Prince George’s population is projected to grow to 108,618 by 2046.
Surrey is expected to see the largest growth by 66.5 per cent to a population of just over 1.05 million by 2046.
